Registrar
issues
Don’s registrar is now on maternity leave after prolonged sick leave and
having spent only 2 weeks in the practice in December 2006. She is due to start work again in January
2008 and will need a practice somewhere in the area. Until we know who we have got starting in
August we can’t be sure who will be free to take her as she did not seem to
‘fit in’ at Don’s and he would prefer not to have her back.
Formative
assessment 4-month formative assessment will take place
on 16th May. All the videos
arrived at the meeting (‘thank you’ to all concerned) and were ‘swapped’. Registrars will need to bring the results of
the 360 degree appraisal (summary sheets only) and their trainer’s marking of
the videos. Trainers will bring back the
video they have now and do the formative assessment on that candidate. We will start at 1.30 pm (food available), or
as soon as possible after this, at Gillingham Medical Centre.
Formative
assessment for people doing the nMRCGP should probably include nMRCGP tools
such as COT (consultation observation tool) and CBD (case-based discussion) and
this will fulfil the requirement to have another trainer involved in some of
these assessments. From August 2008 the
numbers involved are likely to be so large that a group exercise is going to be
impossible and we will review how to manage this. Probably trainers will be paired up to ‘swap’
Registrars (or ST3s as we will be calling them?) although it may still be
sensible to try to all do it on the same afternoon.
This year
we will have smaller numbers and may be able to use the process to familiarise
those of us still doing ‘old style’ training with the new tools.
The
workshop will need to view consultations on a regular basis to ‘calibrate’
ourselves and any trainer who is concerned about a Registrar’s performance
should bring the video to one of these sessions.
Brian Banner-Martin The workshop is happy to have Brian attend
meetings if he will find it useful.
PREPARATION FOR AUGUST 2007
Formal
offers for GP training places will be delayed until June due to the MTAS/MMC
review process. This means that there
will be very little time between candidates accepting places and starting in practice,
so paper work for the ‘performers’ list’ will need to be completed ASAP. Candidates will be allocated to trainers on a
geographical basis, if possible, to save time.
Doctors
entering ST1/ST2 training i.e. full 3-year schemes and shortened 2-year schemes
will need contact with a trainer in general practice during their hospital
jobs. This is to check that they are
covering relevant sections of the GP curriculum and completing the necessary
components of the nMRCGP. If they are allocated to their future trainer they
will get to know the practice and be able to ‘start’ quickly when they start
their GP post. It may be useful to get them to look at the ‘patient pathway’
for someone referred to the hospital speciality they are doing.
There are
moves to increase the time in GP to 18 months possibly including short
attachments in GP during hospital jobs using up study leave and funding, to pay
trainers £100 per day. This would
obviously make contact easier but it will need to happen even if the funding is
not available.
UPDATE ON NEW CURRICULUM AND VTS
The GP
curriculum has been updated on the website.
The changes are mainly cosmetic to make it easier to read and use but
there are a few changes to the content. Pete,
Naveen and Anne will be meeting with the relevant consultants to discuss how
the curriculum can be covered without disrupting the departments too
badly. If any problems become apparent
during contact with ST1s and ST2s please let us know as there are bound to be
‘teething problems’
The VTS from August will only have Registrars
in general practice attending and will need to cover those towards the end of
‘old style’ MRCGP/training and others starting nMRCGP. We may have to split into 2 groups at times. This ‘GP orientated’ VTS will be less
suitable for Foundation doctors so we need to find an FY2 community educational
supervisor if at all possible. The
relevant course is being taken by a few people locally so encourage people
(particularly your partners!) to contact Peter and consider taking on the role.
nMRCGP TOOLS
All trainers will be attending Deanery training days
in the next few months. We will review the tools in the next TWS.
PLANNING
FOR FUTURE MEETINGS
We will meet in July before the new intake in August
to finalise (we hope) the allocation of ST1, 2 and 3s and to do further work on
the nMRCGP tools.
FUTURE
MEETING
The next meeting will be held at
Higham Surgery (ME3 7DB) on 11th July 2007
